Christian is at present seeking donations to help with conducting academic research to validate the plausibility that the Chinese, like his Vikings ancestors, visited America before Columbus.
His research is a combination of “boring” desk top research and “fun” adventuring, where he travel to China, Korea, Japan, the North-Pacific Rim, Alaska, Canada, North America, and Mexico to look for archaeological evidence, visit museums, meet with historians, and build up relationships with local partners.
Provided the academic research works out, then the next stage of the project will be to build a replica of an ancient Chinese vessel on a beach in China and attempt to sail it to America in order to further validate the theory of pre-Columbus interaction between China and America. It is therefore important to have built up a network of local partners in potential ports of call along the Pacific Rim route as these places are not the world’s most visited sailboat destinations, so local knowledge and support will be key for a successful voyage.
Moreover, once the project gets to the boat building and sailing stages, then a scholarship fundraiser will also be organised in favour of United World Colleges most likely with the purpose of sending students from the Kurils, Kamchatka, Aleutians, and Bering region to one of the 18 UWC colleges around the world , so this initial research phase will also be used to spread the word about UWC in the local communities along the way and find out how UWC can have the best impact in these places (see Charity).
This is the most capital intensive project that Christian has done to date, because the “fun” adventure is preceded by a necessary “boring” academic research phase, without which the boat building and sailing phases of the project would be meaningless. It would not make a lot make sense to try and recreate a possible pre-Columbus voyage from China to America, if the academic research concludes it is implausible such voyages ever took place. As Christian says: the research phase is a necessary evil go get the right to play.
That said, although the research phase of the project is not the Ultimate Adventure, it will still be a hell of an adventure and will introduce people around the world to a part of the world that few know about and even less think about.
Donations, sponsorships and grants are presently therefore sought to help covering the costs associated with completing the academic research. Christian is covering his own time cost and does not draw any salary from received funds. Funds are exclusively used to pay other academics for their research work, as needed, and to cover Christian’s travel costs when doing field research.
