The fundraising concept is under development. As usual, Christian plans to fundraise for United World Colleges (“UWC”). His current thinking is that he will use the voyage across the Pacific to raise scholarships for indigenous people along the North Pacific Rim, in particular those living in the Kurils, Kamchatka, Aleutians, and Bering Strait Region.

The Kurils consist of 56 islands. The majority of these islands belong to Russia, but in an unresolved dispute, Japan lays claim to 4 islands closest to Japan. Kamchatka belongs to Russia. The Aleutians consist of more than 150 islands, which are mostly owned by Alaska and the rest by Russia. The Bering Strait Region belongs to Russia West of the Strait and Alaska East of the Strait. There are also a few islands in the Strait itself, some of which belong to Russia and some to Alaska.

Following the North Pacific Rim northeast, there are more than 300 islands between Japan and America

These places originally belonged to the Ainu, Aleut/Unangan, Yupik, and Inuit, but after Western settlers moved in and laid claim to their land, their numbers dwindled as they succumbed to Western disease and exploitation. Their fate is thereby similar to the Native Americans.

Future UWC scholars?

These indigenous people may well have helped the Chinese reach America in early times, but in later history have had a rough ride, so it only seems fitting to use this project to fundraise for their benefit.

This part of the world and the indigenous peoples plight are little known to most people so to get students from these places represented at UWCs around the world would help to promote international understanding and global awareness.
